Everyone knows the New York Giants will be on the prowl for a quarterback this offseason, but they also have a glaring need at cornerback thanks to the slow development of Deonte Banks.
One route general manager Joe Schoen could take is selecting Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter in the 2025 NFL draft, but that seems less likely given their quarterback needs. The alternative is finding a solution on the free agent market.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan believes the Giants could target D.J. Reed (New York Jets), although they wouldn’t be the only team vying for his services.
The Giants need a No. 1 cornerback in the worst way, and Reed is the best option on the free agent market. He can cover and tackle, and he has already proved capable of handling the New York market. Reed might not be your prototypical shutdown corner, but the Giants will pay him as such to move across town. Last season, they gave up 7.7 yards per pass attempt (29th) and had only five interceptions (31st).
The problem with Reed is that although he plays well in coverage, he doesn’t exactly force many interceptions. He’s recorded just six over his seven-year career and none in 2024.
Still, Raanan’s colleague, Jeremy Fowler, sees the Giants winning a bidding war and signing Reed to a four-year, $72 million contract with $40 million guaranteed (as proposed by Raanan).
The Packers were a lot of fun to think about here. But unless they get their offer a little closer to New York’s — it’s a $3 million difference per year — I can’t justify turning down what the Giants are giving. Plus, Reed gets to stay in New Jersey.
That is a massive contract for a cornerback who would be considered the No. 2 guy on most teams but desperate times call for desperate measures. And let’s be honest, Schoen is desperate.
