LAKELAND, Fla. — Gleyber Torres homered in his new spring training home for the first time Wednesday, part of what he hopes is a fresh start with the Tigers after an unceremonious end to his days with the Yankees.
“I feel I deserve to be with an organization that wants me,” Torres said Wednesday after coming out of a lopsided game against the Phillies at Joker Marchant Stadium. “I’m here now and that’s the reason I’m here.”
Asked if he felt he was no longer wanted by the Yankees, Torres said, “I don’t know. Maybe you can ask him.”
That him would be Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who ultimately made the decision to move on from Torres, the centerpiece of the trade that sent Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs in 2016.
