Since the Shreveport Captains left town, people in Shreveport-Bossier have been BEGGING someone to bring baseball back to the area. There’s Facebook groups dedicated to it, webpages, business plans, people were upset when Fairgrounds Field got torn down…there definitely seems to be a passion for baseball in our community.
However, what those same passionate people that want baseball in Shreveport may not realize is that we already have a championship winning ball club in town that could always use a few more supporters – The Louisiana State University Shreveport Pilots. Sure, their not a “pro team” or an affiliated team. BUT, they are ball team worth paying attention to.
You may not realize it, but the Pilots have been one of the most dominating ball clubs at their level of play in recent years. If you want baseball in Shreveport, you don’t have to look far for a great club to support.
LSUS Dominates the NAIA
For those that don’t know, The LSUS Pilots play in the NAIA – the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. It’s sort of like the NCAA but for smaller schools. They started in 1937 and roughly 83,000 student athletes participate in various sports every year.
But, when it comes to the world of college baseball, the LSUS Pilots are the NAIA equivalent of the LSU Tigers in the NCAA. What I mean by that: the Pilots absolutely dominate!
The list of their accomplishments are CRAZY good – 19 Conference Championships, 20 Regional Appearances and they won the NAIA World Series in 2003, 2011, 2012, 2021, and 2022. I also guess I should mention that they have a pretty good shot at winning another one…because on the season so far, the Pilots are undefeated and sit at 22-0.
Here’s How You Can Support the LSU-S Pilots Baseball Team
Want to jump on the Pilots bandwagon? You still got plenty of time. Their next set of games is this weekend at Pilot Field in Shreveport against Huston–Tillotson University. If you’ve never been to Pilot Field before, it’s located at 62 University Pl, Shreveport, LA.
And, like I said, there’s PLENTY of season left. So, buy your LSU-S merch. Buy tickets to a game. Go support the Pilots! If you want ‘professional’ baseball back in Shreveport, you should the teams we already have…because they’re pretty darn good.
Oh, and the Centenary Baseball team is pretty good too and have actually produced a big league pitcher in Seth Lugo. So, there’s lots of great baseball in town to see. Support it. Who knows, maybe that could lead to other good things.
