College baseball: Catawba wins, has big weekend series at UVA Wise

SALISBURY — Catawba’s baseball team threw “Johnny Wholestaff” against UNC Pembroke at Newman Park on Tuesday and won 10-4.
Eight Catawba pitchers recorded at least one out. Seth Sharpe (1-0), who pitched two strong innings, was credited with the win.
Catawba (17-6) scored five runs in the first and five in the fifth to beat the Braves (14-9) in the non-conference matchup.
Nathan Chrismon (South Rowan), Ty Hubbard (South Rowan) and Cooper Bryson drove in two runs each for the Indians. Cole hales (Carson) had two hits and scored twice.
Morgan Padgett (East Rowan) had two hits for the Braves and drove in a run.
Catawba is 9-3 in the SAC and is in a tight race with Lenoir-Rhyne (7-2), Carson-Newman (7-2), Wingate (8-4) and UVA Wise (8-4).
Catawba travels to UVA Wise for a series this weekend.

Emory & Henry’s Steven Smith (West Rowan) is batting .367 with three homers and 17 RBIs. The senior infielder has nine doubles and has scored 20 runs.
