The Saint Joseph’s College baseball team closed out its Florida spring trip with a doubleheader split against Penn State-Abington on Friday, March 14, at Lake Myrtle. The Monks dropped the opener 7-4 but bounced back in dominant fashion with a 10-1 win in the afternoon, improving their season record to 5-3.
Game 1: Penn State-Abington 7, Saint Joseph’s 4
The Monks struck first in the second inning, pushing across two runs. Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH) lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME), and Nick Villano (Peabody, MA) followed with an RBI groundout to score Ethan Belvin (Claremont, NH). The early 2-0 lead held until the fourth, when Penn State-Abington scratched across an unearned run.
After tying the game in the fifth, the Nittany Lions took control with a five-run seventh inning against reliever Jack Dyer (Medford, MA). The Monks briefly held a 3-2 lead in the sixth thanks to an Ethan Belvin RBI double that plated M. Wearne, but the advantage didn’t last.
Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH) turned in a solid start, allowing just one earned run over 5.1 innings while striking out five. Nick Villano provided a late highlight with a solo home run in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Game 2: Saint Joseph’s 10, Penn State-Abington 1
The Monks’ offense came alive in the second game, breaking through with a six-run fifth inning before adding three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Dawson Gundlah (York, ME) led the charge with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, driving in four runs, including a three-run double in the decisive fifth inning. Luke Doughty (York, ME) also had a strong game, collecting three hits, scoring twice, and knocking in two runs.
Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, NH) was dominant on the mound, striking out 10 over six innings while allowing just one run to earn the win.
The Monks’ fifth-inning rally started with an Nick Villano single and a run-scoring error, followed by clutch hits from Luke Doughty, Dawson Gundlah, and Nic Frink, who all laced RBI doubles. Jake Carlisle chipped in with a two-run double to round out the offensive surge.
Saint Joseph’s racked up 14 hits in the win, including five doubles. Nick Villano and Jake Carlisle each finished with two hits and two runs scored.
With the Florida trip in the books, the Monks return north to play the Bobcats at Bates College on Tuesday.
