Dad is going to have some explaining to do at home.
NHL minor league Utica Comets GM Dan MacKinnon on Thursday traded his own son, defenseman Will MacKinnon, to the Cleveland Monsters.
What’s worse is that the Comets didn’t even get anything in return for MacKinnon.
The defenseman was traded for “future considerations,” or basically nothing, the New York Post reported.
The 24-year-old MacKinnon is in his third pro season in the American Hockey League and had four assists in 42 games for Utica in the 2024-25 season.
On the bright side, MacKinnon could be in line for more playing time with the Monsters fighting for a playoff spot.
Cleveland, was 28-18-5, good for fourth in the North Division entering Thursday, a prime postseason position in the 32-team league.
The Comets are in last place in the same division at 23-26-4, eight points behind sixth-place Belleville.
Utica added Austin Strand via trade and have Seamus Casey and Santeri Hatakka returning from injury.
The Comets are the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, while the Columbus Blue Jackets are the Monsters’ parent club.
The elder MacKinnon has been with the Devils organization since 2016-17, rising from Director of Player Personnel to his current positions of Assistant GM, Senior VP of Hockey Operations and Comets GM.
The Post said that on his University of New Hampshire athletics bio, where he played for four years, the younger MacKinnon listed the Devils as his favorite team and cited “all the support I get from my family” as what he’s most thankful for.
MacKinnon was also part of the Philadelphia Flyers’ 2019 development camp.
The AHL is considered the top development league for the National Hockey League.
