Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse coach Fran Brown once coached at a school whose basketball motto used to be, “We’ll play anybody, anytime, anywhere.”
It appears he’s bringing that motto to Syracuse football, saying he’s willing to practice with Colorado this spring.
In a Monday press conference, Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders said he wants the NCAA to consider allowing joint practices and making Colorado’s spring game a scrimmage against another team, much like NFL teams do in the preseason.
The NCAA does not allow teams to play each other in spring.
And while it seems unlikely the NCAA will amend its bylaws in time for these joint practices to happen this year, that hasn’t stopped Brown from showing his interest, saying the Orange would fly out to Boulder for three days of practice.
Newly hired Prairie View A&M coach Tremaine Jackson also expressed interest in the idea of practicing against Colorado.
Sanders made his head-coaching debut at Jackson State in the same conference as Jackson.
Brown hasn’t been shy about his affinity for what Sanders has done at Colorado. In November, Brown said he admired the job Sanders has done in turning around the program and transforming gamedays in Boulder into a star-studded spectacle.
“Hopefully we’ll turn our atmosphere into that kind of atmosphere,” Brown said at the time. “I love what he’s doing. It helps guys like myself that are coming up in coaching.”
Syracuse’s edge rushers coach, Nick Williams, worked under Sanders as Colorado’s defensive line coach in 2023, his first season in Boulder.
