No. 1 Tennessee baseball lost its first game of the season on Tuesday night when it fell to East Tennessee State in 10 innings, 7-6.
“I think a bunch of it was a team making plays, whether it’s hitting the ball out of the ball park, or making plays on defense,” Tony Vitello said following the loss. “There’s a couple times they didn’t make plays on defense that we could have taken advantage of and didn’t fully do. But I think a lot of it is credit to them, and a lot of it is poor decisions by me and it coming back to bite us a little bit. And then also some guys getting exposed from having a little bit of fear.”
ETSU snapped Tennessee’s 22-game winning streak — a stretch dating back to the last two games of last season — with the victory inside of Lindsey Nelson Stadium. UT was a win away from tying the program record for consecutive wins.
Tennessee’s 20 wins to begin the season was its best start in program history. UT was the lone unbeaten team remaining in college baseball.
“We’ll see what we got,” Vitello said. “To this point, it’s been nothing but glad-handing and hype and everything else. Some of it’s earned. Some of it’s not. All of it’s been positive. There’s a lot of negatives in this game, and there’s a lot of negatives in competing, so we’ll see what we got between now and a quick turnaround.”
Here are our takeaways from Tennessee (20-1) loss to East Tennessee State (16-4) in this week’s midweek contest.
