College basketball coach jokes about Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles playing defense

Georgetown basketball coach Ed Cooley did not hold back during his team’s most recent game.

During Georgetown’s Monday postseason clash with Washington State, the Hoya coach used prominent blind musicians past and present to describe the performance on the court.

“Neither team is defending. It’s like Stevie Wonder is guarding Ray Charles out there,” Cooley mused to the FS1 reporter interviewing him during the game.

Charles, blinded during childhood, passed in 2004 at the age of 73. Wonder, who lost his sight at a young age and turns 75 in May, notably released a song in August 2024.

Cooley’s defense did enough to get the victory. The Hoyas defeated the Cougars 85-82 to advance in the College Basketball Crown postseason tournament.

Cooley had an understandable gripe about his team’s defense. The Cougars shot 50% (29-of-58). That was much better to Georgetown’s 40.8%, but the Hoyas made 2 more field goals (31) thanks to 18 more attempts (76) than WSU. Georgetown was able to score more 3-point range on nearly double the attempts, going 13-of-36 compared to Wazzu’s 5-of-20.

Georgetown is set to face Nebraska on Wednesday evening.
