MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – So many changes have happened in college football over the past few years that the sport’s coaches can’t keep track of.
“What happens if you lose a kid in Spring ball?” Klieman asked reporters during media availability on Wednesday. “Now you’ve gotta make a decision on that kid, because if he’s not going to be a part of your 105, is there an injured reserve? Have you guys found that out?”
Klieman’s media availability on Wednesday marked the beginning of K-State football’s spring practice sessions. The Wildcats will take the practice field for the first time on Friday and will be allotted up to 14 additional on-field practices across the following 33 days, per NCAA rules.
While that rule is clear, others aren’t.
“Is there a practice squad? I don’t know. I don’t think any of those things have been talked about, or if they have, we haven’t been told about them as coaches. We aren’t in those meetings, so a lot of us in the industry are frustrated because a lot of these decisions are made without our input.”
Klieman also mentioned issues with the transfer portal being open during the Spring.
“Our best players are getting contacted every day right now,” Klieman said. “And it may not be them in particular, but it’s gonna be their agent saying, “Hey we’re looking for this position in particular or hey we lost someone in spring ball, we’re looking at that position. Or we’ve got some excess money to dump, let’s go and get that kid.” So this month of April is going to be craziness.”
Of all the rules and changes discussed with the media on Wednesday, Klieman had far and away the biggest issue with the new roster limit.
“We’ve gotta get our roster down to 105, and we’re quite a bit higher than that,” Klieman said. “Make no mistake, I’m not in favor of this at all. We’ve got a lot of kids that want to be in the program that are not able to be in the program.”
Zero players have departed K-State’s roster for the transfer portal during the Spring. That seems likely to change as the Wildcats cut their roster down heading into the Fall.
