Tufts Outhit by Amherst, Drop Series Opener 5-1

AMHERST, MA (April 4, 2025) – The Tufts University baseball team was outhit by the Amherst
College Mammoths in the first game of the nonconference series at Memorial Field on Saturday. The Jumbos were defeated by a score of 5-1.

Tufts (8-11) would actually score first after AJ Lysko reached with a walk in the top of the second inning. He advanced to second after a pickoff attempt went past the Mammoth’s (8-9) first baseman. Nick Banner stepped up to the plate and drove in Lysko with a single to put the Jumbos on the board, giving the rookie catcher his sixth RBI of the season.

Amherst’s response came in the bottom of the third. They tagged four hits in a row off of graduate student starter Silas Reed to plate a pair of runs, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead. The traffic on the basepaths came to an end before extensive damage was caused thanks to a slick double play by Reed, Ozzie Fleischer and Lysko.

The home team put a single run on the board in both the fifth and sixth inning to end Reed’s outing. The offense did not provide the starter with much support, as they were stuck against Amherst starter Nick Fassert for seven innings. The Jumbos only managed five hits, with the only run-producing hit being the Banner bop back in the second.

Emmet Christian took the mound trailing 4-1, and was knocked around for four hits over two innings of work. The rookie, making his first relief appearance, let up the fifth and final run in the seventh after a pair of base hits.

The Jumbos went quietly in the ninth, going down 1-2-3 to drop the opening game of the series by a score of 5-1.

The Jumbos will head home on Sunday with a chance to take the series as they host the final two games against Amherst with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
