Lapp Named NESCAC Pitcher of the Week after Complete Game Gem

MEDFORD, MA (April 7, 2025) – The Tufts University baseball team flipped the script on the weekend after dropping game one of the series to Amherst College with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. For his complete game effort in the rubber match, senior starter Jacob Lapp was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week by the league office this Monday.

Lapp was scintillating on the mound in the second game on a chilly Sunday afternoon. It was a performance that hailed back to the days of spitballs and the Huntington Avenue Grounds, with the senior finding weak contact instead of seeking the strikeout. After a scrappy run was plated by the Mammoths in the top of the second following a base hit, Lapp was off and rolling.

The senior retired 23 batters in a row to close the game with a win for Tufts. The 4-1 victory was helped along by Lapp’s incredibly efficient pitching. He was awfully close to a Maddux, with the earned run all the way back in the second being the only required statistic that he lacked following the 89 pitch complete game. Despite relying largely on the ground ball and weak fly outs to the outfield, Lapp still managed to punch out four Mammoths over the nine innings.

It was the longest start of the season for Lapp, and ended with only one hit recorded for Amherst. One walk awarded gave the visitors their only other base runner down the stretch, making it a relatively stress-free day in terms of managing base runners.

Lapp becomes the fourth different pitcher to be named NESCAC Pitcher of the Week this season, joining Silas Reed, Connor Podeszwa and Emmet Christian in the honors. The Jumbos have claimed 80% of the Pitcher of the Week awards so far this season, with four of the five weekly awards going to the blue and brown.

The Jumbos have just this Monday off as they get ready to go over to Beverly to take on the No. 6 Endicott Gulls in a midweek regional matchup at 3:30 pm.,
