Longtime NHL goaltender, broadcaster for ‘Hockey Night in Canada’, dies

Greg Millen, a former NHL goaltender and longtime hockey analyst, died on Monday. He was 67.

Millen’s death was announced by the NHL Alumni Association, which didn’t provide a cause of death.

“It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden passing of Greg Millen today,” the NHL Alumni Association wrote in a post to X.

“Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Greg’s family at this very difficult time,” it added.

Millen played 14 seasons in the NHL from 1978-92 for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings. He finished with a 215-284-89 record with an. 873 save percentage and 3.88 goals allowed per game in 604 games played.

After his playing career, Millen transitioned to broadcasting and began by covering the Ottawa Senators during their inaugural season in 1992-93. He later served as a color commentator for CBC’s “Hockey Night in Canada,” which he joined in 1995, and for the NHL on Sportsnet. Millen covered 12 Stanley Cup Finals, 12 NHL All-Star games, three Olympic Games and two World Cups of Hockey.

Millen, who earned a master’s degree in leadership from the University of Guelph in 2014, also assisted in leadership character development for the NHL’s Seattle Kraken and various corporations, according to the NHL Alumni Association. The Toronto native also taught leadership at Fleming College in nearby Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

“The NHL is saddened by the passing of Greg Millen, a veteran of 14 NHL seasons as a goaltender and more than three decades as a broadcaster,” NHL Public Relations said in a post to X. “Millen will be missed as a respected TV analyst on Hockey Night in Canada and with Sportsnet. Our thoughts are with his family, his broadcasting team and his many friends in the game.”

Millen is survived by his wife and their four children.
