Mario Cristobal shares his approach to navigating the spring transfer portal window

Spring football will wrap up for the Miami Hurricanes football program on Saturday and college football chaos is right around the corner as it relates to roster construction around the country.

That’s because the spring transfer portal window will open on April 16th and will close ten days later on April 25th.

That period will mark the final time that many players can freely transfer and remain eligible for the upcoming 2025 season—and it also marks the final time a program can put the finishing touches on a roster before fall camp begins in August.

“Will it be chaotic? It is part of the business, but let’s go to work and put together the best team that we can,” UM head coach Mario Cristobal said after Tuesday’s practice. “The portal is always open, regardless of the dates that are prescribed. Everybody is in the portal. That is the reality of where we are in college football. You adapt or you die.”

In the winter transfer portal window, the Hurricanes added 11 players to the roster as UM looked to address its glaring needs.

Quarterback Carson Beck, who transferred in from Georgia after leading the Bulldogs to a 24-3 record during his two years as a starter, is the headliner of Miami’s 2025 transfer portal class. Beck is still recovering from an offseason procedure that repaired the UCL in his throwing elbow and he is being held out of action this spring.

Other winter transfer portal newcomers on offense include WR CJ Daniels, OL James Brockermeyer, TE Alex Bauman, and TE Jack Nickel.

UM addressed deficiencies in the secondary by adding five defensive backs in CB Xavier Lucas, CB Ethan O’Connor, CB Charles Brantley, CB Emmanuel Karnley, and DB Zechariah Poyser. According to 247Sports, all of Miami’s new additions in the secondary are four-star transfers.

Through 13 spring football practices, Cristobal is pleased with the way that group has elevated the play in the secondary.

“The one position we really had to answer questions on was in the secondary. I think through some talent acquisition, we look a lot better.”

Miami also added four-star DT David Blay in the portal from Louisiana Tech.

According to 247Sports, UM’s transfer portal class ranks No. 5 in the country and the best amongst the ACC programs.

The Hurricanes claim eight 4-star transfer portal additions this offseason and only Texas Tech, LSU, and Oregon have added more four-star transfers.

What type of challenge does navigating the spring portal window present? Cristobal acknowledges that it can be chaotic, but ultimately he is looking for players who embrace team success and growth through competition.

“You work your tail off and you make sure you show guys a path for improvement and you make sure you find every human possible that puts Miami first,” Cristobal said about his approach to the portal. “That is still the best part of a winning formula. Guys that understand that if everyone does well and if you get the pieces to do well, then the magic happens.”

Miami will hold its 14th practice of the spring on Thursday morning.
