The roof of a nightclub in the Dominican Republic collapsed early Tuesday morning, killing at least 124 people, including a Lawrence, Massachusetts, restauranteur. Fray Luis Rosario was one of many killed after the roof of Santo Domingo’s famed Jet Set Nightclub collapsed onto those attending a merengue concert. “He was a very honest, good guy. He went out of his way to help others,” Luis Cabrera said. “Nobody expected him to go on vacation and never see him again.”Rosario, a husband and father, owned the Terra Luna Cafe in Lawrence and also owned the Terre Negra Cantina in Providence, Rhode Island. “Horrible. Great citizen here, and he does a lot for the city,” a Lawrence resident said. As rescue crews continue to search for more victims in the rubble, baseball Hall of Famer and former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez announced that he also was grieving, as several of his family members were in the club at the time of the roof collapse. In a video Martinez posted on Instagram, he grieved for his homeland and braced for more loss.”Our hearts are with you, and we all are affected. I still have family members that are still in the (rubble), and we don’t know what happened to them, but we just want to be strong like we have always been. We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time, so I just hope that everybody has the same courage,” Martinez said.Others in Lawrence, like Santiago Matias, are continuing to monitor the news coming out of Santo Domingo. Matias said his sister, Florinda Rojas, 67, runs a bakery in the Dominican Republic and was at the concert. He says Rojas’ children are at the site of the collapse, awaiting word on their mother’s condition. “They been there the whole time,” Matias said. “No time to eat, rest, nothing like that.”In a statement, the mayor of Lawrence, Brian DePeña, sent his condolences to families affected by the crash: “On behalf of the City of Lawrence, I extend my deepest condolences to the victims and families affected by the tragic collapse of the roof at Jet Set discotheque in the Dominican Republic. Our hearts are heavy as we stand in solidarity with the Dominican community, including in our blessed City of Lawrence.”City leaders say 65 percent of Lawrence is Dominican. A vigil for victims is planned near City Hall at 4 p.m. on Thursday, DePeña said.
