GREENVILLE, N.C. (ECU ATHLETICS) – Blake Gillespie threw eight scoreless innings to help lift Charlotte past East Carolina 6-0 Friday night in an American Athletic Conference series opener at Truist Field.
The 49ers (20-13, 7-3 AAC) held a 7-5 advantage in the hit column and clubbed a pair of home runs while the Pirates (20-15, 6-4 AAC) saw five different batters register a hit each.
Gillespie (5-3) scattered the five ECU hits and struck out 11 against just one walk to earn the victory. Ethan Norby (4-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Dawson Bryce paced the home side with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI while Logan Poteet also drove in a pair of runs and scored two. Braden Burress logged a hit and drew a walk at the top of the Pirate lineup.
A walk and hit by pitch to begin the bottom of the first put Charlotte in business as it would plate the game’s first two runs via a Cody Gunderson RBI single and a fielder’s choice that scored Noah Furcht from third.
The 49ers extended the lead to four in the home half of the fourth with a Poteet two-run home run and did not allow East Carolina much the rest of the way. A two spot in the sixth rounded out the evening as Gillespie spread out a double and three singles over the fourth through eighth frames before Joseph Taylor retired the Pirate side in order in the top of the ninth.
Up Next: ECU and Charlotte continue the series Saturday back on campus at the 49ers’ Hayes Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
