College football transfer portal: Projecting most active teams during spring window

College football’s spring transfer portal opens Wednesday and while many of the top-tier options in free agency signed in the fall, there remains a wealth of teams expected to be active in hopes of securing depth ahead of the 2025 season. With spring practice coming to a close, personnel types have a better idea of two-deeps and where roster holes must be filled with experience.

Rather than rely on the freshmen class, Power 4 programs now have a chance to add depth from the transfer portal or could try and pencil in an emergency starter if there’s a talented player who unexpectedly becomes available. The top-ranked player this cycle, former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, made his intentions known over the weekend after the Vols parted way due to a contractual disagreement.

Signing a quarterback of his caliber this late in the offseason, as compared to a situational pass rusher or backup offensive tackle, for example, is not comparable in terms of resources allotted to that acquisition. For the most part, teams are looking to fill out rosters, but there are always diamonds in the weeds who can be developed.
