Dennis Gates will need to rebuild his Mizzou coaching staff after a second assistant has been confirmed as a departure this offseason.

Early Tuesday, the Tigers confirmed that associated head coach Charlton Young was leaving the program. Miami has since confirmed his hiring as an associate coach under new head coach Jai Lucas, who steps into his first head coaching job.

Young, a Miami native, spent the past 3 seasons on the staff of Mizzou, helping lead the Tigers to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances under Gates. Mizzou also praised Young for his work in building a pair of top-30 recruiting classes for the Tigers, including a top-5 class in 2024.

In Miami’s press release, Lucas praised Young as a “South Florida legend.” He spent 4 seasons as the head coach at Georgia Southern, his alma mater, and spent 9 seasons on the staff of Leonard Hamilton at Florida State before coming to the Tigers.

“C.Y. is a South Florida legend with 30 years’ experience as a head coach and assistant coach,” Lucas said. “His extensive knowledge of the game, coupled with his strong national relationships, make him an invaluable asset to the program. I am thrilled to have someone with such a wealth of experience by my side.”

Along with Young’s departure, Mizzou also lost Rob Summers to the Cleveland State head coaching job. It will be interesting to see how Gates reloads his staff for the season ahead after an impressive performance during the 2024-25 season.
