Jim Schlossnagle: What to know about Texas baseball coach
Four things to know about Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle
For the first time since 2022, college baseball’s top team can be found in the home dugout at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas is set to host UTRGV in a non-conference game on Tuesday night. With a 29-5 record, Texas is the consensus No. 1 team in college baseball’s five major polls. The last time that Texas played a home game as a top-ranked team was on March 9, 2022.
UTRGV is 25-10 this season. The Vaqueros are in fourth place in the Southland Conference standings.
Stay tuned for live updates.
End 4: Texas 9, UTRGV 0
With UTRGV turning to its fifth pitcher of the night, Texas was retired in order. Meanwhile, UT starter Kade Bing has allowed one hit while hitting one batter so far tonight.
End 3: Texas 9, UTRGV 0
Texas added two more runs in the third inning. Rylan Galvan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Will Gasparino drove in a run with a single.
The top six hitters in the Texas batting order − Kimble Schuessler, Galvan, Jalin Flores, Gasparino, Adrian Rodriguez and Casey Borba − have each had a plate appearance in each inning tonight. Since he’s walked twice and been hit by a pitch, Galvan has not yet registered an official at-bat.
End 2: Texas 7, UTRGV 0
One inning after he drew a 13-pitch walk, Texas catcher Rylan Galvan needed to only face six pitches in the second inning to secure another full-count walk. But this walk − Galvan’s team-leading 30th of the season − came with the bases loaded, and thus Texas scored its fourth run of the game.
Texas later added a two-run single off of Will Gasparino’s bat. Casey Borba was also walked with the bases loaded.
End 1: Texas 3, UTRGV 0
After Texas led off the bottom of the first inning with Kimble Schuessler and Rylan Galvan’s seven- and 13-pitch walks, the Longhorns got a two-run double from Jalin Flores. Casey Borba later brought home Flores with a double of his own.
UTRGV got two runners aboard in the top of the first inning, but a double play helped Texas get out of an inning that also featured a diving catch in center field by Will Gasparino.
Odds and ends from the Texas-UTRGV series
Texas holds a 54-7 lead in its all-time series with UTRGV, but the Vaqueros have gotten the last laugh. Last year, UTRGV recorded a 17-9 win over Texas in a game that featured UT using first baseman Jared Thomas as its starting pitcher.
Seven years ago, another anomaly happened in this series. Texas utility player Jake McKenzie played all nine positions in a run-ruled rout of UTRGV. McKenzie is believed to be the only Longhorns to ever accomplish that feat.
