Nebraska punter Jack McCallister‘s stay in Lincoln was a short one, as McCallister, who transferred to Nebraska at semester, announced he planned to enter the transfer portal.
Husker247 can confirm that McCallister’s name is already in the portal. McCallister will have one year of eligibility remaining at his next stop.
“I’d like to thank Coach Rhule, Coach Foley, Coach Ekeler, Coach Maher and many others for the opportunity to play at Nebraska,” McCallister wrote on social media. “However, due to a change in circumstances I have entered the transfer portal with one season of eligibility remaining.”
Last season at Washington, McCallister punted 36 times, averaging 44.0 yards per kick and having 12 of his 36 punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Each of his three years, McAllister improved his average punting numbers. Eight of his 36 punts in 2024 went 50 yards or more.
McCallister handled every punt for Washington in 2023 and 2024 and all but one punt during the 2022 season. He also handled holding duties on Washington’s special teams units.
The 6-foot, 205-pound McCallister is a native of Edmonds, Washington.
The transfer leaves the Huskers with one punter on their roster — redshirt freshman Kamdyn Koch who didn’t appear in a game last season. New Husker special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler also could have another foot in mind to add to the mix. He used rugby-style kickers at Tennessee and the Vols had success with it.
McCallister committed to Nebraska during the winter portal window and enrolled at semester. Since that time, Nebraska shifted roles on its staff, with Ed Foley moving to a different job within the program and hiring Ekeler from Tennessee. Former Husker specialist Brett Maher is also serving on staff in a full-time role this spring.
