College Football: ECU’s Battle for QB2

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – After Jake Garcia left East Carolina’s Football Team on Tuesday, and entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, his backup quarterback position opened up for the rest of the Pirates roster.

Especially with starting Quarterback Katin Houser sitting out of drills as his wrist rehabs from surgery, more reps than usual exist for the suitors looking to earn QB2.

“They see it as an opportunity,” ECU Offensive Coordinator John David Baker said of his QB room, “they love each other and they respect each other, but at the same time they’re competitive.”

The natural ascension would be Redshirt Sophomore Raheim Jeter, who was the third-string before the move. The Spartanburg-native has been on the roster each of the last two years but has only thrown one pass in each season.

Another candidate is J.D. Black, who redshirted last year without playing any snaps.

Coming out of high school, two quarterbacks emerge. Chaston Ditta was a 3-star commit out of Lake Travis, Texas, and Cole Hodge, a fellow 3-star recruit from Louisville, KY both are entering their True Freshman season.

The Spring Game is next Saturday, April 26th, in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, where plenty of reps will go around to the quarterbacks looking to prove themselves.
