COLLEGE BASEBALL: Christian Petry walks it off for Hobart against Keuka

GENEVA — Junior second baseman Christian Petry led the Hobart baseball team with four hits on Thursday evening, with his fourth and final base knock allowing the Statesmen to walk off with an 11-10 win over Keuka College.

In the lone meeting this regular season between the two local schools, the Wolves carried a four-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning at McDonough Park. However, Hobart rallied with a five-run ninth. Petry’s one-out, two-run single to center field snapped the Statesmen’s three-game losing streak.

Petry was 4-for-5 in the contest with three runs batted in.

This was the fifth time the two schools had met since Hobart brought back its program at the start of the 2023 season.

Keuka has lost all five of those meetings and is still searching for its first victory over the Statesmen since April of 1913.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Alex Frank picked up the win in relief for Hobart. He entered in the top of the ninth and struck out two while allowing no earned runs.

First-year right-hander Hunter Corkran suffered the loss for the Wolves after not recording an out. Corkran relieved senior right-handed pitcher Ethan Tillotson in the ninth inning.

Senior Keegan Ferris got the start for Keuka and the right-hander hurled 5.1 innings, striking out two while getting a no-decision.

Right-handed sophomore Jack Byrnes started for Hobart but managed just one inning of work after allowing a six-run (four earned) first inning to the Wolves.

Sophomore shortstop Alex Evans and junior first basemen Derek Novicki each collected three hits for Keuka (10-16), combining for half of the Wolves’ total.

First-year outfielder Jack Farnen and sophomore right fielder Connor Schmiedlin both provided two hits in the win for the Statesmen and Farnen knocked in three runs as well.

Hobart (15-10) returns to action on Friday afternoon to start a three-game series against St. Lawrence University at 3 p.m. in Canton. The two sides will play two more on Saturday in a doubleheader to conclude the series. Game one starts at noon.

The Wolves will play a doubleheader Saturday as well against Alfred State College. Game one will start at 1 p.m.
