GRAMBLING — Grambling State cruised to an easy 21-4 win over Alcorn State on Thursday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
GSU improved to 16-19 overall and 11-5 in the SWAC, while ASU dropped to 5-27 and 1-14 in conference play.
The Tigers continued their hot hitting, hammering three homers and racking up 12 total hits. Cameron Hill and Shannon Martin both put together multi-hit games with Hill going 2-for-5 with five RBI, a double and a homer. Martin 2-for-3 with four runs scored.
Chris Marcellus and Aries Gardneraccounted for GSU’s other two home runs.
GSU starting pitcher Mason Matrinez improved to 2-2 on the season after pitching five innings. He struck out three batters while surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks.
Derrell Fletcher and Thomas Leidencombined for two innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs on one hit and fanning four batters.
Alcorn State opened the scoring in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Jaylon Burrell.
Grambling State responded in the bottom of the second with four runs to a take a 4-2 lead. The Braves added a pair in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4.
The Tigers seized complete control in the bottom of the third when a solo homer by Marcellus sparked streak of 17 unearned runs.
With GSU leading 7-4 in the fourth, Gardner smacked a three-run shot to right field extending Grambling State’s advantage to 10-4. The Tigers grew its lead to 14-4 by the end of the frame.
Leading 18-4 in the sixth, Hill helped the GSU eclipse the 20-run plateau with a three-run homer to make it a 21-4 game.
Kanious Davis (1-3) was charged with a loss after allowing nine runs on seven hits and seven walks.
