The Rams used free agency to address most of their perceived immediate needs, which in theory leaves them open to taking the 26th pick in the first round of next week’s NFL Draft whichever direction they like.
Asked about how he views that slot on a pre-draft conference call with media Friday morning, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah said he could see either cornerback or tight end being in play at that slot.
“To me, I look at the corner as being an option for them there,” Jeremiah said. “That one would make some sense. I wouldn’t sleep on a guy like (LSU tight end) Mason Taylor if that was someone that they really loved and were comfortable with.”
Jeremiah projected Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos to the Rams at No. 26 in his latest mock draft. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound corner was a First-Team All-SEC performer in his lone season with the Rebels last fall after leading team with 13 pass breakups and tying for the team lead with three interceptions. He also chipped in 50 tackles while starting all 13 games.
“Trey Amos to me is a guy that just for some reason struck me as a Les Snead type of player,” Jeremiah said. “He’s just so consistent and so solid. He can do a lot of different things.”
While the 6-5, 251 Taylor has not been linked to the Rams any mock drafts, he checks in as the No. 3 tight end prospect and No. 32 overall player on Jeremiah’s latest Top 50 overall prospects. Taylor set LSU single-season record for his position with 55 receptions; he had 546 yards and two touchdowns while starting in 12 of 13 games (did not play in Texas Bowl vs. Baylor).
Either option would fit the current physical and mental makeup of the Rams’ roster, according to Jeremiah.
“I would say what the Rams have done, they’ve got a lot of guys who were just ready-made, like just polished, good football players,” Jeremiah said. “Not getting enamored or carried away with other things and just laser-focused on getting guys that, when you watch them on grass with pads on, are really, really good and not getting too carried away or enamored with everything else. To me, those are two guys in Trey Amos and Mason Taylor who I feel like I know 100% who they are and what they’re all about.”
