Cannon Peebles‘ first home run Friday snuck over the wall in left field.
There was nothing sneaky about the second one the Tennessee baseball catcher hit. It smashed high up the scoreboard in right field in the eighth inning as Peebles hopped around first base.
Peebles’ two homer-game backed up another quality start from Liam Doyle as No. 3 Tennessee beat Kentucky 8-2 in the series opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Doyle struck out eight in seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. He allowed a two-run homer in the first inning then allowed one hit in the next six innings. He has three straight quality starts. He has allowed four runs on seven hits and five walks in 21⅓ innings, striking out 31 in those starts.
Peebles homered from both sides of the plate to provide the biggest offense blows for the Vols (33-5, 12-4 SEC). Reese Chapman delivered a two-out, two-strike single in the field to put UT ahead 3-2 after the Wildcats (20-15, 6-10) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Vols have won five of six series against Kentucky in coach Tony Vitello’s tenure, including the past two. They have a 14-6 record against UK under Vitello with one win in the 2022 SEC Tournament.
Pitcher AJ Russell is in line to make his SEC debut this season during the series against the Wildcats. The junior has started three midweek games as he returns from Tommy John surgery.
