SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Missouri State University announced Saturday morning that defensive star and MSU senior Todric McGee has died.
He passed away early Saturday at a hospital from injuries he sustained on Friday at an apartment complex.
Springfield police tell KY3 officers responded to a check well-being call in the 500 block of E. Cherry Street for a man with a possible accidental gunshot wound. Police confirmed that the man with the gunshot wound was McGee.
SPD is still investigating the accidental shooting
“On behalf of the university and our entire department, we want to express our condolences to Todric’s family, friends, and teammates,” said Missouri State Director of Athletics Patrick Ransdell. “This tragedy has shaken our football program to the core, and we want them to know we are here to support them in every way possible at this extremely difficult time.”
A native of Wichita, Kansas, McGee graduated from Wichita Northwest High School. He was 21 years old and entering his fifth season with the Missouri State football program. He was the Bears’ starting safety in 2023 and 2024 and earned all-conference honors in 2023.
The Missouri State Bears Football team shared this mic’d up video of McGee during a practice in 2024.
“Our football family is in shock and in mourning at the loss of Todric,” said Bears head football coach Ryan Beard. “We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of his family and our MoState football team at this time as we begin the healing process. Join us in praying for Todric and the people who loved him.”
According to Ransdell, grief counseling services are available immediately for staff and student-athletes.
During his time as a Bear, McGee earned the honors of:
- All-MVFC: 2023 (2nd team)
- MVFC Defensive Player of the Week: 8/31/24
- Preseason All-MVFC: 2024 (2nd team)
Last season, he started five games before sustaining a season-ending injury in the home win over Youngstown State. Even in five games, he finished 8th on the team in total tackles (42) with 16 solos, 1.5 tackles for loss, and interception and five passes defended. He was also named MVFC Defensive Player of the Week and MSU Defensive Showtime Award winner for after game at No. 3 Montana (8/31/24) after logging 11 tackles, three solos and 0.5 TFLs.
