Get to know new Kentucky guard Denzel Aberdeen

As a true freshman during the 2022-23 season, Aberdeen played 12 games off the bench, averaging 1.6 points. He scored a season-high six points in a loss to UCF in the NIT.

His saw role slightly expanded as a sophomore, as in 32 games off the bench, he played an average of 9.7 minutes per game, and he averaged 3.3 points per game while shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three. Aberdeen broke out in the SEC Tournament, scoring 20 points in a semifinal victory over Texas A&M that saw him shoot 4-for-5 from three, pick up four steals, and pull down a rebound. The season saw Florida reach the SEC Tournament Championship Game as the tournament’s sixth-seed and reach the NCAA Tournament where the Gators lost to Colorado in the Round of 64.

This past season, Aberdeen was a key piece to Florida’s run to a National Championship. He played in all 39 games, starting five, and on the year averaged 7.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 35.0 percent (36-for-103) from three.

In the regular season, Aberdeen had a four-game stretch where he moved into the starting lineup to replace an injured Alijah Martin and averaged 16.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 45.3 percent from three. The run included going for 22 points in a win over South Carolina, 20 points in a win over then-ranked No. 22 Mississippi State and going for 10 points in a road win over then-ranked No. 1 Auburn.

Overall as a starter, he averaged 14.4 points and shot 41.4 percent from three.

Aberdeen averaged 8.0 points per game during Florida’s three-game run to an SEC Tournament title which included dropping 11 points in a semifinals victory over Alabama.

In the Gators’ six NCAA Tournament games averaged 6.0 points, 1.8 rebounds per game and shot 40.0 percent from three while scoring a tournament-high 12 points in a Sweet 16 victory over Maryland and going for seven points and two rebounds in the National Championship Game against Houston which included a 1-for-2 trip to the free throw line with 19 seconds left to play to put Florida on top 65-63 which wound up being the final score.
