Oregon State men’s basketball adds Southern Indiana forward via transfer

Oregon State men’s basketball has its first addition in the transfer portal after several subtractions.

Former Southern Indiana forward Stephen Olowoniyi announced his commitment to the Beavers on Tuesday. A sophomore originally from Melbourne, Australia, the lanky forward started 29 of 30 games for the Screaming Eagles last season.

At 6-8, 200 pounds, Olowoniyi averaged 13.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game for USI while shooting 59.1 percent from the field. He scored a season-high 26 points against Tennessee Tech on Jan. 2.

Olowoniyi previously played one season at Virginia Military Institute, averaging 7.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a freshman. He played prep basketball in the U.S., earning all-state honors his senior year at The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee.

The Beavers have been hammered in the transfer portal, losing seven scholarship players — including all five starters — to a booming NIL market. Leading scorer Michael Rataj reportedly received a $1.6 million payday from Baylor, while guard Nate Kingz is expected to earn $750,000 at Syracuse. OSU’s entire NIL budget last season was just $800,000.
