ACC men’s basketball transfer portal: Where they went; where they came from; who’s left?

Syracuse, N.Y. — The Division I men’s basketball portal closed at midnight Tuesday.

There was a whole lot of activity in there since it opened March 24. News reports have indicated more than 2,200 players entered the portal. More names will trickle in after the deadline as paperwork gets finalized.

Some of the transfers have found homes. Some of them have not. Syracuse.com has a database that tracks every ACC transfer.

In the ACC this spring, 102 players have entered the transfer portal. The number does not include walk-ons.

Of those 102, 16 do not have remaining eligibility. Five of those players were on SU’s roster last season. Those players either need an NCAA waiver specific to their situations or are relying on the NCAA issuing a blanket five years to play college basketball.

Syracuse.com contacted the NCAA to learn when that decision would be made. The organization that oversees college sports has not responded to that request. Reporter Jon Rothstein, citing an NCAA source, tweeted that no decision would be made on extra years until after a final determination is made on the House settlement.

Players, though, are entering the portal just in case or are entering with a specific challenge based on a previous medical or other condition.

It’s worth noting that none of the 14 ACC portal guys that have exhausted their eligibility have turned up at other programs.

Of the ACC guys who have remaining eligibility, 85 players elected to transfer out of the conference; 33 of those guys have not announced new school destinations.

Here’s where the 52 committed ACC players went:

  • 31 committed to high majors (including the Big East)
  • 21 committed to low or mid-majors

The ACC, of course, gained players through the transfer portal.

Here’s the breakdown of those 55 players:

  • 26 committed from high majors (including the Big East)
  • 29 committed from low or mid-majors

The accounting on this stuff can get a little tricky.

Five players transferred from one ACC program to another ACC program. They have been counted as both a transfer to and a transfer from a high-major program.

Those guys:

  • Dai Dai Ames, from Virginia to Cal
  • Nait George, from Georgia Tech to Syracuse
  • Isaac McKneely, from Virginia to Louisville
  • Ibrahim Souare, from Georgia Tech to Syracuse
  • Chauncey Wiggins, from Clemson to Florida State

The transfer portal closed Tuesday, but players can commit to a new program any time before fall classes begin at their new schools.
