SSU basketball

Sonoma State head men’s basketball coach Rich Shayewitz has left the program to take a role on staff at UC San Diego.

Shayewitz, an SSU alum, has spent the past 30 years coaching at SSU, mostly as an assistant. He led the women’s program starting in 2017 and then became the men’s head coach in 2021. At one point he coached both programs at the same time.

SSU softball

The SSU softball team has clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament heading into its final series of conference play this weekend.

The Seawolves are one of the hottest teams in the CCAA and swept Cal State Monterey Bay last week to push their current winning streak to seven games. They’ve also won 14 of their past 15 and are now 32-19 on the year and 19-13 in conference play.

SSU beat Monterey Bay last week by scores of 8-0, 3-0, 4-3 and 5-3 and is now tied for third in the conference standings.

Charlie Johnson threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout in the opener, while Jasmine Moreno doubled with two RBIs and Kaiya Dickens drove in a pair of runs.

Ava Paquin then tossed a no-hitter with four strikeouts and a walk in the 3-0 victory.

SSU then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a wild walk-off win in their 4-3 win in Game 3. Iris Bejano had the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the seventh.

SSU rounds out the regular season with four games at Chico State this weekend.

SRJC women’s wrestling

The SRJC women’s wrestling team brought home three medals from the CCCAA State Championships to cap its inaugural season.

Jasmine Vo placed fourth overall at 145 pounds, going 3-2, including a dramatic last-second takedown to advance to the third-place match.

Evelin Cerda placed sixth overall at 117 and Lyla Kondrashoff went 3-2 and won her final match of the day to place seventh overall at 160.

As a team, SRJC placed 11th overall, just 2½ points shy of a top-10 finish.

SSU golf

The SSU men’s and women’s golf teams had some strong individual showings at the CCAA championship tournaments earlier this week.

The men placed third out of eight teams and Ivan Sablan placed fourth overall individually with a score of 1-over par for the three-round tournament at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara. Sablan fired a tournament-best 6-under par in his final round to jump 13 spots.

The women placed fourth out of six teams at Sandpiper and Avery Foster placed fifth overall individually with a score of 11-over par. She carded her best round of the tournament in the final round with a score of 1-over par.

Next up are the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships. The men will be competing in Riverside starting May 7, while the women will be heading to Amarillo, Texas, on May 14.
