KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Four coaches with more than 1,000 wins in men’s college basketball met at Municipal Auditorium Sunday afternoon. It was the first time the four head coaches were under the same roof at the same time.
The coaches were:
- Herb Magee (1,144 wins at Philadelphia Textile)
- Harry Statham (1,122 wins at McKendree University)
- Dave Holmquist (1,080 wins at Biola and Fresno Pacific)
- Danny Miles (1,040 wins at Oregon Tech)
Magee, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, is the second-winningest men’s head coach in college basketball history – trailing only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski on the all-time list. Magee says his key to long-term success is taking things one day at a time.
“Every coach will tell you the same thing,” he said. “Game by game, week by week, season by season. All the sudden, 20 seasons became 30, then 40, then 50.”
Holmquist is still active as a head coach at Biola University (CA). His 1,080 wins are the most among active coaches. He says coaches can get the most out of their group when they pour 100% into the team.

“You ask players to care a lot. As a coach, you want your ‘caring level’ to be very high,” Holmquist said. I think when you have a spirited group together, where everybody cares and really wants to pursue something special, then good things happen.”
Statham spent 52 years at McKendree University outside of St. Louis. His key to success? Giving the players ownership.
“It was ‘our’ team. It’s ‘your’ team. Everybody. It belongs to you. Be proud of it,” he said. “[My players] were very good to me and helped keep our team clean.”
Miles won 1,040 games at Oregon Tech. Miles’ teams won 30 games 10 times. He said controlling the “controllables” helped bring his program success.
“One thing, we could play hard. Our team is going to play as hard as any in the country,” Miles said. “I measured our success not by the wins and losses, but by enthusiasm, intensity, and execution.”
The four coaches were in Kansas City for 2025 Small College Basketball National Awards Show.
