After dropping three straight SEC baseball series, the Alabama Crimson Tide got a much-needed “get right” week.
Coach Rob Vaughn’s Crimson Tide (35-10 overall, 12-9 SEC) beat the Samford Bulldogs 11-7 in midweek play on Tuesday in Birmingham and erased a 5-0 deficit two nights later to beat the Missouri Tigers en route to a series sweep of the SEC’s only winless team in conference play.
After a 4-0 week, Alabama moved up one spot to No. 16 in Monday’s new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Crimson Tide’s biggest jump in any of the rankings came in Perfect Game’s updated Top 25. Justin Lebron, Kade Snell and company rose six spots to No. 19, one spot below the Louisville Cardinals (30-13) and one spot ahead of Dallas Baptist (30-13).
Alabama’s highest ranking came in The New York Times‘ updated college baseball Top 25, where the Tide land at No. 14.
Alabama’s ranking remained unchanged in two other Top 25 rankings Monday: Alabama was No. 18 in D1 Baseball’s updated Top 25, also ranking one spot below Louisville and one spot ahead of No. 19 Coastal Carolina (33-11).
Baseball America kept the Tide at No. 23 in their updated Top 25 but added:
“Outside of a slow start in the series-opener against Missouri, Alabama largely cruised to a 4-0 week in which it averaged over nine runs per game. Seven different Crimson Tide hitters drove in multiple runs, while both Riley Quick (5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) and Zane Adams (7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) turned in excellent starts.”
For the third straight week, the Texas Longhorns (37-5) were a unanimous No. 1 across Monday’s Top 25 rankings after sweeping Texas A&M. Texas has won nine straight games and all seven SEC series.
For the second straight week, a new team rose to No. 2 in the rankings: the LSU Tigers (36-9), who took two of three against Tennessee over the weekend in Baton Rouge.
