A former LSU basketball star is returning to college basketball in a front office role. Shaquille O’Neal will join Sacramento State as the men’s basketball general manager, according to a report from ESPN.
Per Shams Charania, O’Neal’s position does not come with a salary and O’Neal will volunteer his time. O’Neal’s son, Shaqir O’Neal, plays for Sacramento State.
O’Neal’s move continues a trend of past and current NBA stars working in college basketball general manager roles. Last month, the Atlanta Hawks‘ Trae Young took a similar position at Oklahoma.
O’Neal has kept busy since retiring from the NBA in 2011. He’s worked alongside Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith as an analyst on Inside the NBA and taken part in several business ventures. Shaq’s even taken up the art of DJing.
O’Neal played at LSU from 1989-92. He earned All-American honors twice and was named player of the year in 1991. In his three seasons, he averaged 21.6 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.
Perhaps if Shaq finds success at Sacramento State, he could take on a similar role at LSU in the future. O’Neal remains a frequent visitor to LSU and makes his presence felt around campus.
