With the calendar having flipped from April to May, postseason college baseball is nearly upon us. Just three weekends remain in the regular season for most programs before conference tournaments begin and the road to Omaha gets underway in earnest.
It’s a hectic, fast-paced time of year, and the NCAA Tournament will be here before you know it. Here’s everything to know heading into Selection Monday.
When Is The NCAA Tournament Selection Show?
College basketball has Selection Sunday, baseball has Selection Monday. This year’s selection show will take place at 12 p.m. ET on Monday, May 26 and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU or ESPN2.
How Are Teams Selected?
College baseball’s NCAA Tournament consists of 64 teams sorted into 16 different four-team regions. Teams seeded one through four and compete in a double-elimination format to begin play.
Automatic bids go to the 29 conference champions, while the selection committee will decide which 35 teams earn the remaining at-large bids. Some important metrics to keep in mind when it comes to determining seeding and at-large teams include RPI, strength of schedule, non-conference strength of schedule and “quad one” wins. That might sound like a lot to follow, but I find Warren Nolan’s dashboard to be a useful tool.
When Do Regionals & Super Regionals Begin?
The tournament begins the Friday following Selection Monday, so regionals will start on May 30 and run through June 2.
After regionals, the field will be whittled down from 64 to 16 teams, and Super Regional play will commence. This year, supers will run from Friday, June 6 through Monday, June 9. The format for supers is a best of three series.
When Is The College World Series?
Each year, eight teams make the College World Series, which airs on ESPN networks. The action at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha follows the conclusion of Super Regionals, starting on Friday, June 13 and running through either Sunday, June 22 or Monday, June 23. The College World Series Finals—a best of three series between the final two teams—begins on Saturday, June 21.
