UCLA wrapped up spring ball on Saturday with the Spring Showcase at the Rose Bowl. The weather didn’t quite cooperate, with rainy conditions for much of the day likely keeping a fair bit of the crowd away. Still, a healthy collection of fans populated the shady side of the Rose Bowl for the showcase, which lasted a little over an hour and a half.
Now, the reality is that this showcase, more than any in history, was kind of weird for a very obvious reason: while UCLA’s starting quarterback for next year was in the stadium, he was not in uniform. Nico Iamaleava, UCLA’s incoming transfer quarterback, won’t suit up until the summer, so making any grand pronouncements about the offense will have to wait until he arrives.
The structure of the showcase was not quite a spring game, but not quite a typical practice either. While there was a little bit of individual and special teams work early, for the most part UCLA opted for competitive skeleton, one-on-one, and 11-on-11 periods to keep fans engaged. The showcase also closed with a lengthy 16-minute 11-on-11 period followed by a two-minute drill period, where the offense had three tries to take the ball to the end zone for 70 yards in 1:37.
