Texas A&M is trying to make up for lost time during the season’s stretch run, and the Aggies began doing that on Saturday afternoon with a tidy 3-1 victory over No. 2 LSU in the first game of a doubleheader in College Station.
The Aggies, who are just 26-19 overall and 9-13 in the SEC after the win, broke a 1-1 tie with 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before holding on for dear life in the 9th. Left-hander Ryan Prager was excellent for Texas A&M, allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits in 7 stellar innings. Prager did walk 3 but didn’t let that ruin his outing, and he had 5 strikeouts in improving to 3-3 on the season.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin about an hour after the conclusion of Game 1. Texas A&M will try to earn a doubleheader sweep to further beef up its sagging NCAA Tournament resume before the teams meet in the weekend series finale on Sunday afternoon.
The Game 1 victory didn’t come without some drama in the 9th inning, as LSU put runners on first and second with 1 out. But with the tying runs on base, Texas A&M slammed the door once and for all by inducing a fly out and a strikeout to end the threat and end the game. The lethal Tigers, who feature 6 batters hitting above .300, were shut down for a change in dropping to 37-10 overall and 14-8 in the SEC.
Texas A&M, which is ranked 38th in RPI and trying to bounce back from last weekend’s sweep at the hands of Texas, got going just in time in that pivotal 7th inning on Saturday. Ben Royo ignited the rally with a leadoff triple before pinch-hitter Hayden Schott knocked a single up the middle to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead. They added an insurance run in the inning when LSU center fielder Chris Stanfield dropped a deep fly ball off the bat of Caden Sorrell.
After surviving that 9th-inning threat, Texas A&M had a crucial victory and will now try to get another one later Saturday.
