College baseball boyfriends on course to face each other in the playoffs

Although both Cole Philpott and Aiden Phipps have finished their respective senior season schedules with Grinnell College and Beloit College, baseball isn’t done with them just yet.

And there’s a chance their teams could face off on the diamond once again.

Both the 23-17 Grinnell Pioneers and 26-13 Beloit Buccaneers have qualified for the 2025 Midwest Conference baseball tournament, which will be starting on Friday at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Phipps and Beloit will be facing off against Monmouth in the early morning while Philpott and Grinnell with play Lawrence immediately afterward.

If Beloit and Grinnell both win or lose their first game, the two colleges will play one another later that afternoon.

The MWC Championship game takes place on Saturday afternoon.

With baseball playing a central role in how Phipps and Philpott met one another and became boyfriends, it’s only appropriate that the game won’t let either of them go just yet.

Their story as a couple began when their schools played each other on March 27, 2023, and Philpott was impressed enough by Phipps’ performance on the mound to reach out on Instagram.

When they told their story to Outsports, both players acknowledged they were looking forward to hearing what their teammates would shout when Philpott stood in the batter’s box against Phipps in the future.

They got a chance to experience that for the final time in the regular season when Grinnell visited Beloit on April 18 of this year.

Phipps started on the mound and gave up two runs over six innings, striking out four and taking the win in the Buccaneers’ 7-2 victory.

One of those K’s was Phipps, who went down swinging in the third inning. He batted leadoff for the Pioneers and went 0 for 3 with one walk.

Thanks to the success of their teams during the regular season, their baseball stories didn’t end there and the possibility remains that they could continue in high stakes games this weekend.
