Shaquille O’Neal is going back to college for new role

Sacramento State is going all in on trying to become a legitimate college basketball program.

With two winning seasons since 1991, the program has hired former Kings star Mike Bibby as head coach, and on April 29, announced Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal as its general manager. Sacramento State will open a new basketball facility this season, too.

“O’Neal will focus on recruitment, marketing, and holistic player development — both on and off the court,” a news release said. “O’Neal has waived a salary and will serve in a volunteer capacity.”

“His presence, experience and leadership will elevate everything we’re building here, and that’s why I reached out to Shaq to get involved with the program,” Bibby said.

O’Neal’s son Shaqir transferred from Florida A&M to Sacramento State in March, and recently, Mikey Williams, a former four-star guard, has transferred to Sacramento State from UCF. The program has also added several other transfers.

Per ESPN: NBA superstar Stephen Curry was named an assistant GM at his alma mater, Davidson, last month, and Hawks star Trae Young has that same role at Oklahoma. Retired NFL quarterback Andrew Luck last year accepted the GM position with his old school, Stanford.

Shaq played three seasons at LSU before forging a Hall of Fame career and a standout second act as an analyst on “Inside the NBA.”
