With rookie minicamp set to begin on Friday and a load of undrafted free agents expected to join the roster, the Carolina Panthers will be forced to make some subtractions. They started on Thursday.
According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the Panthers will release tight end Colin Granger. Granger, the former Division I basketball player, made the transition to football this offseason following his final year as a forward/center for Coastal Carolina University.
The 6-foot-9 and 225-pound Granger split his collegiate basketball career between three programs—having played for Ohio University (2020 to 2022) and Western Carolina University (2022 to 2024) before finishing out with the Chanticleers in 2024 and 2025. He averaged 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds over a total of 120 games.
Granger had no prior football experience before being signed by the Panthers back on April 7.
President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan explained the decision to ink Granger during his pre-draft press conference a few weeks ago.
“I think it’s a good opportunity to fill out our 90-man roster,” Morgan told reporters. “Colin had a good workout. He was recommended by George Fant, who we’re familiar with from our Seattle days. It’s just an opportunity just to add a guy, and be open-minded and just kinda try some new things and see what we have.”
