Penn State basketball hires 1st general manager: report

Penn State’s Mike Rhoades has added a new position to his coaching staff in Happy Valley.

Rhoades is hiring former Rice head coach Scott Pera as the program’s first general manager, according to a report from The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. Penn State has yet to confirm the news.

Pera, a Hershey, Pennsylvania native and a Penn State Harrisburg graduate, has coached college basketball since 2006 after 11 years in the high school ranks.

He worked under Rhoades at Rice from 2014-2017 before being named the head coach. He had a 96-127 record with the Owls through the 2024 season.

Before Rice, Pera made stops at Penn and Arizona State as an assistant coach. He also coached at Artesia High School in California, at Annville-Cleona High School in Pennsylvania, at Palmyra High School in Pennsylvania and as an assistant at Elizabethtown College.

Penn State is coming off a 16-15 season filled with adversity and disappointment, while nine players from last year’s roster have either exhausted their eligibility or entered the transfer portal. Rhoades has a group of five freshmen coming in, three returners and one transfer addition thus far.
