USA TODAY Sports national college football columnist, Blake Toppmeyer, recently released his rankings for all 17 ACC football head coaches and how they stack up. Of course, Florida State‘s own Mike Norvell was on that list, and he ranks considerably high given the program’s disastrous 2-10 season in 2024.
At No. 1, perhaps no surprise is Dabo Swinney, head coach of the Clemson Tigers. He led his program to a College Football Playoff appearance despite not utilizing the transfer portal in any meaningful way. Swinney has won 55 games and two national championships during his tenure, so perhaps this ranking is completely justified.
As for Norvell, he lands at No. 4. Which is about where I’d put him as well. As Toppmeyer puts it, “one pitiful season should not entirely erase his track record.” Norvell led the team to a 13-1 season capped off with an ACC championship over Louisville in 2023 before the egregious snub of being left out of the then four-team College Football Playoff.
Norvell is 71-43 across his nine-year coaching career, and 33-27 at Florida State. He was also named the 2023 ACC Coach of the Year.
