Will UNC’s offseason additions live up to the hype?
The North Carolina Tar Heels will sport almost an entirely new starting lineup for their 2025-2026 college basketball season, but a much-improved roster overall.
UNC started to shape its roster when Caleb Wilson announced his commitment in January, choosing North Carolina over Kentucky. The Tar Heels’ roster started to shape even quicker in April: Seth Trimble announced his return for one final season in April, plus UNC landed transfer portal commitments from highly-sought after players in center Henri Veesaar, point guard Kyan Evans and Chapel Hill native Jarin Stevenson.
North Carolina’s roster isn’t complete yet. Ven-Allen Lubin expects to return from the transfer portal, while there’s a decent possibility Drake Powell withdraws his name from the NBA Draft.
As of Thursday, May 8, the Tar Heels have one of college basketball’s top rosters. According to 247Sports, UNC has the sixth-ranked overall team, which combines UNC’s recruiting and transfer classes.
North Carolina trails just top-ranked Houston, Duke (second), BYU (third), Kentucky (fourth) and Arkansas.
Looking at each position on UNC’s roster, every spot has depth except for small forward. If Powell stays in the Draft, I bet 6’6″ West Virginia transfer Jonathan Powell starts at the three. Isaiah Denis or Caleb Wilson could also play small forward, but it all depends on how head coach Hubert Davis sets North Carolina’s rotation.
Kelvin Sampson always reloads his teams with talent, so I’m not surprised to see Houston first overall. The same thing goes with Jon Scheyer, who has Duke the ACC’s team to beat. You might be surprised to see BYU up so high, but snagging a commitment from AJ Dybantsa will do wonders for your team.
