Mike Brennan is returning to Old Nassau for his second coaching stint at his alma mater.
Head coach Mitch Henderson announced the hire of the former point guard as the new associate head coach on Friday.
“I am thrilled to be back at Princeton, a place that has meant so much to me both as a player and a coach,” Brennan said. “The University has been an integral part of my life, and it is truly an honor and privilege to represent such a distinguished institution and basketball program.”
Brennan was a four-year player and two-year co-captain under legendary coach Pete Carril and helped the Tigers reach the NCAA Tournament in 1991 and 92. He played professionally in Germany, Belgium and Portugal before hanging up his high tops for a whistle.
His first spell on the bench at Princeton came alongside John Thompson III from 2000-07. He then moved to American University for two seasons as an assistant before joining Thompson III at Georgetown for four seasons. After four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances on the Georgetown staff, American hired him as head coach.
Brennan piloted the Eagles for 10 seasons and was the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 season after getting American to the NCAA Tournament. He went 125-166 overall, although his 75 Patriot League wins stands as second most all-time and his 125 total victories is third in that’s program’s history.
The last two seasons have been spent on the staffs at Loyola (Md.) and Cornell.
“He understands what Princeton values and what it takes to win here,” Henderson said. “Mike is deeply committed to success at the highest level, and his integrity, work ethic and steady leadership will make an immediate impact. His focus on recruiting, player development, and building strong relationships will be key as we work to compete for Ivy League tittles and return to the NCAA Tournament.”
Brennan replaces Brett MacConnell, whose contract was not renewed following a difficult season in which the Tigers didn’t meet expectations and finished in fourth place in the Ivy League.
Star point guard Xavian Lee announced last month he is transferring to national champion Florida for his senior season.
