The NFL world was stunned when the Cleveland Browns selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round of the draft. It was not an indictment on the former Oregon Ducks quarterback as a player, rather it spoke volumes about how much Shedeur Sanders’ draft stock had fallen.
The Browns would eventually take Sanders two rounds later in a move that further complicated the quarterback position. As it stands, Cleveland has five quarterbacks on the roster, although Deshaun Watson is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles.
With so many different styles and talents in the quarterback room, it is anyone’s guess as to who will walk away with the starting job. NFL insider Albert Breer seems to think that there is at least one candidate ahead of Gabriel.
“I do think the Cleveland Browns… are in a position where they must figure out who’s going to be legitimately ready to compete for the quarterback job in the summer… Right now, I’d bet on Joe Flacco starting the opener for that reason,” said Breer.
The former UCF Knights transfer had an outstanding year at Oregon last year with 30 touchdowns and nearly 4,000 yards passing. Clearly the Browns see the potential in Gabriel as they spent such a valuable pick on him.
But for now, it looks like the college star will have to sit and learn behind a veteran for at least a season.
