Where Did Kim Caldwell Play College Basketball?

If you’re a women’s college basketball fan, there’s one name you should know: Kim Caldwell. She’s been in the news recently as the head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols, one of the all-time programs in NCAA hoops. But many years before she was coaching titles or being courted by Power Five schools, she was sprinting up and down the gym in a small West Virginia college town.

Yes, before she became Coach Caldwell, she was Kim Stephens—the tough-playing guard, the confident leader, and the springboard for a legendary coaching career.

Kim Caldwell’s College Basketball Journey

So, where, you ask, did her hardwood journey start?

Spoiler alert: it’s somewhere you’ve probably never been, but after reading this, you might just want to.

Kim Caldwell played her college hoops at Glenville State University, a tiny NCAA Division II school nestled deep in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia. From 2007 to 2011, she suited up for the Glenville State Pioneers, donning their jersey under the guidance of head coach Bunky Harkleroad.

Caldwell, then Kim Stephens, was more than just a name on the roster. She was a cerebral, high-IQ defender who helped lead the team to competitive success in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).

Her senior year, Caldwell and the Pioneers were invited to the NCAA Division II Tournament, a first for the program. That same year, she was given the WVIAC Student-Athlete of the Year award.

This honored her efforts on the court as well as in the classroom. She was also a WVIAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll multiple times, proving that her leadership extended beyond basketball. Those years at Glenville were more than an interlude—more than a stint, really—they were a proving ground.

The impact of her playing experience remains with her today in the way that she coaches. Caldwell commented on it in an interview after winning the 2022 national title:

In fact, her playing experience shaped a distinctive coaching persona—high-strung, defense-oriented, and ruthlessly efficient. Imagine it as the basketball equivalent of a speed metal band: relentless and exhilarating.

From Player to Champion Coach

Once she left Glenville State, Caldwell wasn’t ready to retire her basketball sneakers. She transitioned directly into coaching, becoming an assistant at Ohio Valley University and Sacramento State initially. But then, in 2016, her own journey came full circle when she returned to her alma mater, but this time as head coach.

And she didn’t simply return; she rebuilt the program.

Over the following seven seasons, Caldwell turned Glenville State into a Division II giant. The Pioneers won 191-24 under Caldwell, earning six conference titles and entering five NCAA championships. The pinnacle of her tenure was in 2022 when she led Glenville State to its first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship. Her style? A high-scoring fast-break offense that saw her teams average over 90 points per contest.

Her success as a coach did not go unnoticed. In 2023, she was hired as the head coach at Marshall University, a Division I Sun Belt Conference program. In her first year, she guided Marshall to a Sun Belt regular-season title and NCAA Tournament berth. She was a Sun Belt Coach of the Year honoree, and her star had officially risen.

By 2024, her name was on the shortlist at premier programs, and when Tennessee—yes, Pat Summitt’s Tennessee—called, she could not say no.
