3 with Alabama football roots earn NFL contracts as tryout players

Three players with Alabama football roots have signed NFL contracts after attending rookie minicamps this weekend on a tryout basis.

The players from Alabama high schools and colleges who earned their way into offseason NFL programs with their weekend work were:

  • Auburn tight end Luke Deal signed with the Detroit Lions.
  • Western Kentucky wide receiver Kisean Johnson signed with the Cleveland Browns. Johnson played at Ramsay High School and was at Alabama State in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons before joining the Hilltoppers.
  • Washington State linebacker Wesley Steiner signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Steiner played for Auburn in the 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Monday’s NFL transactions report wasn’t as good for another former Auburn player. After announcing they had signed Jerrin Thompson on Thursday, the Tennessee Titans released the former Tigers safety on Monday after holding their rookie minicamp this weekend.
