SEATTLE – Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera had to be carted off the field, having suffered a devastating left ankle injury during the ninth inning of Monday night’s game against the Mariners.

Scoring from third base on an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly to medium right field, Cabrera twisted to avoid the tag from catcher Cal Raleigh, his momentum carrying him past the plate.

Cabrera reached back to touch home plate safely, then slammed the ground in pain and was attended to by Yankees head athletic trainer Tim Lentych, as several concerned teammates – led by Judge – knelt or stood near home plate.

After several minutes, Cabrera was loaded into a stretcher and carted off the field in a medical van.

Cabrera’s injury sent a lengthy hush over the T-Mobile Park crowd, altering what had been a celebratory mood for the many traveling Yankees fans who witnessed their team’s 11-5 win.

According to the Yankees, Cabrera was taken to nearby Harborview Medical Center.

“He was in pain. That’s what he kept saying a lot,” said manager Aaron Boone, adding that just before Cabrera was taken off the field, he asked Judge: “Did I score?”

When the Yankees captain acknowledged that he had scored, “That made him smile,” said Boone.

“Kind of shows you what type of guy he is,” said Judge, adding that infectiously upbeat Cabrera “is one of my favorite teammates.”

“He’s always giving his best effort out there, doing the right things on the field,” said Monday night’s winning pitcher Clarke Schmidt. “(It’s a) great win tonight but we’re feeling for Cabby for sure.”

Trent Grisham hit a pair of game-tying solo home runs, Anthony Volpe – on base four times – capped his night with a two-run homer, Austin Wells hit a three-run shot and Schmidt pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in five starts this season.

But there was only concern in a hushed clubhouse for Cabrera, “one of the best human beings in the clubhouse,” said Grisham.

To replace Cabrera defensively at third base, Oswald Peraza moved from second base to third and Jorbit Vivas entered at second base.

On Tuesday, veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu is due to be activated from the injured list.
