State Liners to play in Johnson City

For the second straight summer, Appalachian League baseball will not be played in the city of Bristol.

The Bristol State Liners will play their home games at Johnson City’s Cardinal Park in 2025 it was announced on Monday. Last season, Bristol’s home base was Greeneville’s Pioneer Park due to stadium uncertainty.

Construction has not yet started for the State Liners’ new home at Tod Houston Field in Bristol, Tennessee, and wouldn’t have been completed in time for the season.

Bristol will begin the season against its co-tenants, the Johnson City Doughboys, on June 5.

“The 2025 season will be a unique season for the State Liners. Boyd Sports and the Johnson City Doughboys welcome the Bristol State Liners to TVA Credit Union Ballpark.” Boyd Sports Vice President Jeremy Boler said in a press release. “We look forward to working with the Bristol State Liners and their fans in providing a top-notch experience for both their players and fans.”

Bristol will also be under the direction of new operation/ownership in Boyd Sports, which holds a monopoly over teams in the Appy League’s West Division. Boyd Sports also owns the Doughboys, Greeneville Flyboys, Elizabethton River Riders and Kingsport Axmen.

PRO BASKETBALL

McClung has 20-point game

Mac McClung (Gate City) scored 20 points for the Osceola Magic on Sunday in their 122-120 loss to the Austin Spurs.

McClung also had five rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. He shot 8-for-14 from the field and committed three turnovers.

Osceola (0-2) returns to the court on Thursday against the Mexico City Capitanes.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Ramsey off to good start for UVa-Wise

Evan Ramsey had a double-double as the University of Virginia’s College at Wise earned its first win of the season, an 81-71 men’s basketball win over King University.

An Abingdon High School graduate and a redshirt freshman for the Highland Cavaliers, Ramsey recorded 15 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

That came one day after he had 16 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and one assist in his collegiate debut, a loss to Lees-McRae.

Bradley Dean (Gate City) added 19 points, six rebounds, six assists, one block and one steal on Sunday for UVa-Wise, now 1-1.

The Cavs shot 43.1 percent from the field and held a 45-37 rebounding edge.

King (0-2) was led by Jordan Akal’s 15 points and five rebounds. Keyton Keene (Honaker) made his collegiate debut for King as he missed two shots and pulled down a rebound in three minutes of action.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

King 68, Lincoln Memorial 54

Sarah Thompson (Gate City) had 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals as the King University Tornado triumphed 68-54 over Lincoln Memorial on Sunday.

King (1-1) placed five scorers in double digits, held a 43-30 rebounding edge and shot 49.1 percent from the field.

UVa-Wise is 2-0

Sable Burnside dominated to the tune of 28 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and one steal as the University of Virginia’s College at Wise improved to 2-0 on Saturday with an 80-73 win over Flagler.

Burnside was named South Atlantic Conference player of the week. 

Wise County Central High School graduate Madison Looney added eight points, two rebounds and one assist for the Highland Cavaliers in her second collegiate game.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Shaw steps down as King coach 

After five years as the head coach of the King University women’s soccer team, Paul Shaw has resigned his position.

Shaw had a 14-48-10 record at the helm of the Tornado.
