The winner of this week’s series heads to the state championship round next weekend.
The Santa Rosa Junior College baseball team is still rolling and will host the California Community College Athletic Association NorCal regional finals this weekend.
The top-seeded Bear Cubs (43-1) will host No. 5 seed Sierra (31-13) in a best-of-three series starting at 2 p.m. Friday. Game 2 will be Saturday at 1 p.m. with Game 3, if necessary, at noon on Sunday.
The Bear Cubs advanced out of the three-team super regional round last week with wins over 17 seed San Joaquin Delta (9-0 SRJC) and 13 seed Folsom Lake (5-4 SRJC, 11-2 SRJC) to stay unbeaten in the postseason after two rounds.
Sierra, which finished second in the Big 8 in the regular season, advanced with wins over 16 seed Sacramento City (14-7 Sierra, 13-7 Sierra) and 4 seed Feather River (16-7 Sierra).
SRJC swept Sierra in its three-game series in the regular season. The winner of this week’s series will head to the CCCAA state championships from May 23-26 at Mt. San Antonio College in Southern California.
SSU golf
The season is over for most of Sonoma State’s men’s golf team, but one individual is continuing onto the NCAA Division II national championship.
Cambron Nevill, a true freshman who graduated from Analy High School, shot nine-under over three rounds at the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional last weekend at Victoria Club in Riverside. He finished tied for eighth overall individually out of 110 golfers and carded a round of 4-under par in the final round to shoot up 11 spots.
Overall, the Seawolves finished tied for 16th out of 20 teams. Ivan Sablan also recorded a top-20 finish, finishing 5-under par for the tournament and tying for 20th after a final-round 3-under helped him climb 22 spots.
The NCAA Division II national championships will run Monday through Thursday at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
