They have been in pole position on the betting market all offseason, either all alone or in the co-favorite conversation with Texas, and would become the second back-to-back national champion of the decade if they live up to those expectations.
Consecutive national titles are not all that common in college football, and generally only one team per decade throughout the AP Poll era achieved the feat. There was even a 25-year stretch that spanned the entirety of the 1970s and 1980s in which no team reached the mountaintop in back-to-back years.
NIL and the transfer portal may have created an even more sizable gap between the nation’s top programs and the rest, but they also leveled the playing field to an extent for the most formidable title contenders. That could cut down on dynasties in the years to come.
